Production and quality

What happens during design review and drawing approval?

Design review turns a requirement into a buildable drawing set. It fixes dimensions, equipment positions, cable routes, plumbing, materials and the equipment list, and checks the engineering constraints: gross weight, axle load, electrical capacity and compartment volume. The approved drawing set then governs both production and inspection.

In detail

The review is a working session, not a presentation. Your clinical or operational team describes how the vehicle will be used; the engineering team checks each requirement against weight, power and space. Most of the value comes from the conflicts that surface here, while they are still cheap to resolve.

Typical findings are mundane and expensive if missed: a stretcher that cannot be loaded because the step is too high, a defibrillator that blocks a locker, an air conditioning unit that consumes the auxiliary power budget, an oxygen cylinder that cannot be exchanged without removing a seat. None of these shows up in a specification document; all of them show up at commissioning.

The output is a signed drawing set with a revision number. From that point, changes are controlled: a change order states what changes, what it costs and how it affects the schedule. This protects both sides, because it removes the ambiguity about what was agreed.

Buyers should expect the review to take two rounds, sometimes three. A single round usually means either the requirement was trivial or the review was not thorough. Budget the time; it is the cheapest part of the project and the one that determines whether the delivered vehicle is the one you intended.

Key points

  • PurposeConvert a requirement into a buildable, inspectable drawing set.
  • ChecksGross weight, axle load, electrical capacity, compartment volume.
  • OutputSigned drawings with a revision number; changes become change orders.
  • RoundsTwo or three rounds is normal and healthy.

Further questions

How long does approval take?

Usually one to three weeks depending on how quickly decisions are made on your side. The factory's part is fast; the constraint is normally the internal approval chain at the buyer.

What if we need to change something after approval?

It becomes a change order with a stated cost and schedule impact. Changes are cheapest before body build starts and most expensive after paint.
