M20 Tethered Drone Comms Vehicle

A vehicle that lifts a large tethered drone to hold a position in the air for hours. Power comes up the tether, so flight time is limited by the vehicle's fuel, not by a battery. It carries a loudhailer, lighting or a signal relay depending on the module fitted.

Key facts

Base chassisFord Transit or equivalent, high roof
AircraftLarge tethered multirotor with vehicle-fed power
EnduranceLimited by on-board power generation rather than battery capacity
PayloadsLoudhailer, high-intensity lighting, communications relay
WinchAutomatic tether management with tension control
DeliveryComplete vehicle with flight and tether training

A battery drone gives you twenty-five minutes. A tethered drone gives you as long as the generator runs. For an incident that lasts eight hours — a flood, a search, a public event — that difference is the whole capability. The vehicle stays parked, the aircraft stays up, and the operator changes the payload rather than the battery.

The engineering is in the tether. It has to carry power up, data down, and survive wind loading without chafing or snagging. Our system uses automatic tension control and a managed winch, so the aircraft holds altitude in gusty conditions rather than being pulled around by a slack line.

Payloads are modular: a loudhailer for public communication, high-intensity lighting for night work, or a relay for extending radio coverage over a valley or a crowd. Changing between them is a ground task, done without landing the aircraft in an unsafe place.

Configurations

Each configuration is a starting point — equipment, layout and finish are set per order.

01Public address

Loudhailer module for announcements over large areas or crowds.

02Night lighting

High-intensity lighting for search, scene work and event illumination.

03Communications relay

Radio relay to extend coverage into terrain shadows.

04Surveillance

Stabilised camera with continuous recording and downlink to the control room.

Where it is used

The same platform carries different fit-outs depending on who operates it.

Flood and disaster response

Continuous aerial view and public announcements over a flooded area.

Search operations

Sustained lighting and observation over difficult ground at night.

Large public events

Crowd communication and lighting without fixed infrastructure.

Questions buyers ask

What altitude can it hold?

Altitude depends on the tether length, wind and payload, and is stated for the configuration you order. We do not quote a single number that ignores the payload.

Is it affected by wind?

Yes, all tethered systems are. The tension control and the winch are specified for the wind conditions at your site; tell us the typical and maximum wind you expect.

Does it need airspace approval?

In almost every jurisdiction, yes. Tethered aircraft are regulated, and the buyer is responsible for the approvals. We will provide the technical data your application needs.
